Evil Serial Killers Charlotte Greig 9781848371422 Books Reviews
Gave as a peasant. Showed up on time and is an interesting read.
I got this book a long time ago and never opened it up until now. It gives a nice overview of many different killers without getting too specific and has everything from Angels of Death to Vampire Killers with examples of each. A great reference for those who wish to know a little more about the many chilling killers of the world.
I haven't gotten all the way through this book yet, but so far, I've been a little disappointed.
The title is Evil Serial Killers In The Minds Of Monsters, which is originally what lead me to believe that this book would be more of an "in the killers' minds" sort of book.
The summary also mentions that the author, Charlotte Greig, has written "in detail about fifty of the world's most infamous serial killers". The book is a thin 205 pages, not nearly enough space to put that much detail. Each killer has an average of 2 pages about them. Not detailed at all.
On the inside flap, a few questions are brought up and then it says "Charlotte Greig addresses such difficult questions in this compelling examination of the crimes of fifty of the world's most notorious serial killers". No such questions were addressed, discussed, or even touched upon. Each person has a mere 2-3 page biography about them, which I'm sure could be found online for a much lower price and potentially even in much greater detail.
If you're looking for something that simply touches upon a few famous serial killers, this book is great (excluding a few typos).
However, if the title caught your attention because, like me, you thought "in the minds of monsters" actually meant something along the lines of "in the minds of monsters", this isn't the book for you.
This is a fascinating look at some of the most notorious serial murderers known to man. However, one of the aspects I liked most about this book is the fact that it doesn't only list famous serial killers. There are several murderers mentioned who I had never heard of. The book gives details of the crimes without getting too gruesome and the early lives of killers are covered quite well. The nature of this book precludes it from becoming overly detailed. However, it is an excellent starting base for those interested in digging deeper into the serial killer phenomenon.

Phew what an assortment!
The accounts of each are fascinating. Nannie Doss was an ugly female poisoner of mostly men including mostly her husbands. She was sentenced to life in prison but only lasted 10 years before dying at the age of 60. Harold Shipman was an evil doctor from England who was reported to have killed up to 200 people making him the most prolific serial killer of modern times. Jefrey Dahmer was also a real sicko who killed youths by drilling holes in the victims’ heads while they were still alive and pouring acid into their heads. Police found a human head in his refrigerator. Dahmer was charged with 15 accounts of murder and he was thus sentenced to 15 consecutive life terms. In 1994 a fellow prisoner killed him by smashing his head with an iron bar! Good riddance Dahmer! Albert Fish is the model for Hannibal Lecter of the book and film fame (Silence of the Lambs). He killed various women and ate one of this victims (a 12 year old girl) as well as other children. Fish was exterminated by the electric chair in 1936. Ed Kemper, a monster over 10 feet high (well, he seems like that height going by the photograph on page 33 of this book!), murdered a number of women, including his own mother and one of her friends. Kemper received life imprisonment but should have received a lethal injection. Another crazy criminal outlined in the book is the career of one Charles Starkweather. Starkweather thought he was James Dean but was really nothing like him. He killed numerous people on a murderous rampage through several American states before being captured after a car chase. He was sentenced to death and summarily executed. Good riddance too! His ugly little accomplice Caril Fugate received life imprisonment. A pair of serial killers I have not come across or heard about before are Ray and Faye Copeland, a pair of murdering American hillbillies from Nebraska. They were the oldest people sentenced to death in the USA but Ray died while awaiting execution and his wife died at 82 in prison. Another pair of horrific murderers were Martha Beck and Raymond Hernandez. Beck murdered heaps of people including a child. They were both sentenced to the electric chair and both were executed on 8 March 1951. There are also short accounts of the crimes of Ted Bundy and Pee Wee Gaskins. The first was executed by lethal injection and the other by the electric chair. Paul Knowles was vicious towards women and was finally captured. He tried to grab a cops gun but an FBI agent shot him dead.
This book is a good introduction to numerous criminals and their fate. A short bibliography is provided. Easily read and very interesting. Recommended.
